So after we found out Ava is sick this morning, I went to the grocery store to get her some pedialyte and some gatorade and talked to her on call pediatrician. After dropping that stuff off with Grandma Kathy, I came rushing to the hospital to try and make it in time for the dressing change. Apparently some important surgical PA was here and didn't want to wait for me to arrive or the half hour for Drew's meds to take effect. I didn't make it in time, but Dan said it went well and he did it quickly. The PA did say that Drew's incision looks "very reactive." I'm not sure what that means, but it doesn't sound very good to me.
Then I decided it was time for Drew to have another "bath." As I was carrying the tub full of warm soapy water to his bed I dropped the entire thing on the floor! Water went everywhere! At least we know the floor is nice and clean now.
Soon after that the team came in to do rounds. And the attending doctor had some interesting things to say. He said "we are in no way in control of that infection" and "nowhere near close to discharge" and "at least another week on antibiotics." Very encouraging. When I asked if it might be possible to transfer to our home hospital he said that the surgeons would probably not approve that with his infection the way it is, and there is a small chance they might want to open up the incision again, in which case they'd want us here.
My big Father's Day plans were to have our whole little family together and order pizza and have a little picnic outside. Since Ava is throwing up, we adjusted the plan and ate pizza with Drew's grandpas in the day room. Dan also got a special Father's Day key lime tart from the hospital. And one of the nurses (not ours) had the nerve to complain to me that she was working on Father's Day! I'm pretty sure she's not a father, I'm guessing her kids haven't been stuck in the hospital for close to a month, and I'm thinking she's being paid to be here so I was having trouble feeling sorry for her.
The immunologist did call yesterday and say she would come by today. I am very anxious to have her see Drew's infection and get her opinion on how things are being done here. So for the rest of the day we are waiting to see her and waiting for the play room to open and just hanging out.
Happy Father's Day to all the dads and grandpas out there. We love you!

Just wanted to wish Dan a Happy Father's Day! Your an amazing father!
Happy Father's Day Dan! You are a great father and husband. I'm sorry to hear that the infection is in no way under control.
Gina
what can i do for you andrea???? i wish there was something, anything, i could do to give you some encouragement and release your stress. i prayed for you in church today, but i hope there is more i can do.
love, christa
Oh Andrea, bless your heart! Praise God for your husband and friend, Dan, and that the two of you are together. I know that you want to be back in your own home, with life back to some semblance of normalcy (well, as normal as it can be with two small kids!).
Keeping you in prayer, dear sis!
P.S. Did you get your haircut, 'cause in your post from a couple of days ago, you hair looks shorter. It's super cute, so even though you feel worn out, you look like a million bucks!! 8 )
Andrea...
I'm packing up my car now...anything special that I can bring for you (other than some SANITY!)...GEEZ...more antibiotics...Well..I guess we WILL be meeting on Tuesday...won't we??
I can totally watch Drew for you if you and Dan want to get some dinner Tuesday night. (I'll have all Isaac's supplies with me...they can both just sit back and watch a little television!)
I can't wait to hear what immunologist you talk to and what she says...don't forget to post it (and in DETAIL) for me! please.
(I'm bringing all my lab work too--maybe I can get a consult..)
I'm sorry that you're still there.
I'm sorry that SO many people are insensitive...you just keep being the positive example that you're being....and focus on Drew, Ava, Dan, and YOURSELF...
We love you guys,
Kathy
Hmmm... I wonder if a "reactive incision" is another way to say "red and angry". I love that you still try and find some humor in everything. Happy Father's Day Dan! You're a super awesome father and husband!
Amy
Happy Father's Day Dan! You totally rock! (You too Andrea!)
Happy Father's Day, Dan! You are doing an awesome job- Drew and Ava are lucky little kids. Our thoughts are with your whole family this Father's Day.
Great to see you today (even if it was brief)... Amazingly you looked so relaxed and I'm so happy that I saw you out of the hospital together. Those are much-needed breaks!!!
Happy Father's Day Dan! You truly are an amazing father and husband - a blessing to your family and all who know you.
As for the infection, I'm glad you posted the picture. It's given me increased incentive to pray for healing. I feel like i know better how to pray. Praying for the fluid in the lungs too, and hoping that it goes away with the meds.
Dang it - super sorry that you are still there for awhile longer....And, sorry about Ava, poor little girl! Hugs to you all.
Great pictures! Love the smiles. Dan really looks like he's enjoying that tart.
Well I'm sad your still there with no end date yet, but glad to see that Drew is able to keep on smiling. What a son!
We are praying that Ava gets better (that really stinks!, Drew's incision will heal up quickly and prayers for the two of you. Your sanity, health and emotional wellness.
Love,
Jen
Dan does take the cake. He is the best dad out there. I think most of us mom's would have to admit that there are times when we poke our own husband's in the ribs and say, "Why can't you be more like Dan?" HE is very selfless and a string partner for you. Hooray for Dan!
Anyway, sorry you are still stuck in the horrible awful hospital. I'm considering coming to kidnap you all, but my lack of medical knowledge would probably put Drew at risk. So, I'll have to trust the doctors, although I have to admit, that is getting harder and harder to do each time I read your blog!
We are still praying..
Kristen
Oops! I meant to say a "STRONG partner", not a "string partner", whatever that is. Hope you smiled.
mmmm key lime tart!!! Doesnt get much better than that on fathers day! Still missing and praying....
Man, this news is not too encouraging. I was so sad to read that they would probably not authorize a transfer to UCD. It would be so great to have you closer to home. I have a nasty cold right now, but when I am feeling better, I will be back down to see you! Hope the infection goes away super quick!!
