Over-reacting?

Saturday morning Drew started coughing. Didn't seem too serious, no other symptoms, thought maybe he had allergies...Isn't that what we all think when we're in denial that our kids are sick! But Sunday morning brought confirmation that it was more than allergies. He was coughing a lot, a little bit of a runny nose, and just had that sick look on his face. He felt warm to me and when I checked he had a low fever. He fell asleep on me at 5:30 and slept right through dinner and all through the night. He was coughing enough that we gave him another breathing treatment at 9 pm (he slept right through it).

And wouldn't you know it, Sunday was also the day we heard all about the swine flu. You know, the pandemic claiming lives in Mexico and now infiltrating into the United States? Now, normally I would probably read up on this on the internet and entertain irrational ideas of "what if...?" and end it at that. But the fact that my son was also sick made my heart skip a beat. And then there was a case reported right in our neighborhood! Ack!

So what would any self-respecting heart mom do? Take her kid right in to see the doctor. I'm not taking any chances here! I don't care that I totally made a fool out of myself and asked all my swine flu questions! Our pediatrician is awesome (and patient with me) and after determining that Drew only has a cold and can return to his normal activities "tomorrow if he feels like it," we were on our way home with this mama's heart feeling a little more relaxed. Totally worth my $20 co-pay!

But please, everyone, WASH YOUR HANDS!!

Summer Virus

Around 3:15 Drew's fever got up to 103.2 (orally), and he still had a good hour before he could have more motrin. I could tell he was getting hot when I saw him curled up on the couch again. I asked him if he wasn't feeling good and he said "I'm just sick all day." Poor little guy.

When we got to the doctor I waited until they got a temp and then gave him motrin in the office. He was asleep on me again and I was so hot! The doctor checked his lungs, ears, throat, and everything was clear. His sats were normal. They did a quick urine test which came back clean, but they sent it to the lab anyway. They also did a blood culture and CBC, just in case. What we're guessing is that he just has a summer virus and he will have a temp for 2-3 days and then get better. It's a bummer we can't do much to make him feel better, but it's good that it's not respiratory. The doctor said if it is what we think it is, he should still be able to have surgery as scheduled. That is a blessing!

So we're just praying that we can keep him comfortable and that this virus works it's way out of his system very quickly.

Ear Infection

Dan noticed this morning that Drew felt warm. We took his temp and it was only 99.5. Normally even I wouldn't call the doctor for a temp that low, but then Dan told me that Drew told him his ear hurt twice. And said the same one both times. Since I was already going to the UCD pharmacy to pick up his meds, I decided to call the doctor and see if they could squeeze us in just to check his ears. They did! They are so great!

So we picked up the medicine (I called ahead this time to make sure it was ready) and then went to see our new pediatrician, Dr. Bullen. He's always been in the practice we go to, and he's seen Drew many times since he always gets sick when his own doctor is gone, but we just recently switched to have him as our primary care doc. I really like him, partly because he really likes Drew. Anyway, he checked him out and sure enough Drew has an ear infection. And of course he gave me antibiotics to treat it. I was willing to put up a fight if he was going to try to give me the old "it'll go away on it's own in 10 -14 days" routine. Sheri, the nurse I talk to all the time on the phone, was there and gave Drew six different dinosaur stickers because she loves him.

Unfortunately I asked Dr. B to look up the cervical spine x-rays that we had done about a month ago and Drew's C1 and C2 look like they might be fused so now he needs to have a CT scan. They'd like to do it before surgery since it might affect how his head is positioned during surgery if he has a problem. It's kind of a bummer because he will have to be sedated and that likely means he will have to have an IV, and he has a terrible time with IVs. Me and my questions.

We drove back home to our regular pharmacy to pick up the amoxicillin where Drew got to visit Darla and Christine (the pharmacy techs). They are both so sweet and always talk to him and ask about him if he's not with me. He showed them both all of his dinosaur stickers and gave them high fives. I gave him his first dose of antibiotics tonight and he's sleeping peacefully in his bed right now. I love that kid.

Confusion

The teams from UCSF and UCD conferenced today. I got a call around 10:30 from our cardiologist. The consensus seems to be that Drew can and should have a two ventricle repair! This is wonderful news, what we've been hoping and praying for for the past four years. You'd think we'd be jumping for joy, but things are complicated. We are confused and are still seeking out second opinions. Drew's records are still being collected to send to Dr. Hanley and should be sent out by next Monday. We have also made an appointment for a consultation with Dr. Raf, a surgeon at UCD, on February 11.

The concern is that his surgeon at UCSF has had two chances to do a repair on Drew and hasn't done it yet. Which makes us wonder why he hasn't done it, and if he would do it this time. It raises a lot of issues for us. If all the doctors say the same thing this time, how do we choose? If the two new doctors say that they could have done a repair as an infant, does that mean we should leave the hospital, surgeons, nurses, and staff that we've come to know and be comfortable with? Will insurance pay if we go to Stanford? If Dr. Raf can do the surgery at UCD, why did we get transferred to UCSF when Drew was an infant? Why wasn't he our surgeon to begin with? As you can see, there are more questions than answers and we are just trying to figure things out right now. As usual there is more WAITING. I hate waiting. Perhaps that is the lesson here. Learn how to wait.

Anway, Drew stayed home sick from preschool today, but now I am wondering if he is really sick. He's a little sniffly, a little more whiny, has had an occasional low fever (does 99.5 even count as a fever?) and that's it so far. I guess we're better safe than sorry, but staying cooped up in the house with the kids in this weather is no fun. We've seriously been watching movies all day today!

Drew's birthday is coming up in less than two weeks and I still have no plans for a party. I have a great idea for a party, but the place is not calling me back, and is seeming like it isn't meant to be. I might have to throw something together at the last minute.

Feeling a Little Better

Last night I had a massage at Mellow Me Out. It worked! Everytime I get stressed or anxious I hold my tension in my neck and shoulders. Sometimes I don't even realize I'm stressed until I start to feel sore. Anyway a friend met me over there and the masseuse did a great job focusing on my problem spots. I felt much more relaxed when I got home.

But it was short-lived because even though Drew had motrin two hours earlier, his fever was still 101.1 at 9:30 last night. He was coughing a lot and even threw up a few times from so much coughing. We did breathing treatments every four hours. Around six am he sounded so bad I thought if we can make it two more hours I will call the dr and take him in right away. But after he woke up he looked a little better. Not quite so much coughing, no fever breaking through and he wanted to play and eat and drink. Unfortunately the fever came back (101 at 11:30) and we were supposed to bring him in for bloodwork. I got him a reprieve though, and we have permission to watch him until tomorrow. If he still has a fever tomorrow we will have to bring him in.

So he's feeling a little better, which makes me feel a little better. I even got the Christmas decorations down and the kitchen cleaned up today. I finally got the energy to call the cardiologist about rescheduling the stupid cath and he made me feel better too. He is such a nice man. Anway, for the first time since Wednesday I feel like we may be able to avoid the hospital this time. So keep your fingers crossed!

Lockdown...almost

Since we got the new date for the cath I have decided that we're not taking anymore chances with getting sick. We are all finally well (knock on wood) and I am working really hard at trying to keep us that way, at least until January 2. So luckily both my mom's groups are taking breaks until the first week of January. We are all staying at home. Seriously, no taking the kids to the gym, to the grocery store, to church, anywhere where other children and their germs might be lurking. Except preschool.

I know, that's crazy, everyone's kids get sick at preschool. But Drew's class is very small, he's one of only 9 kids. And the teachers and director are great and are so careful about sickness and letting me know what's going on with the other kids. And I'm staying with him for the first half hour or so, so I can observe for myself and make sure I don't see any signs of illness. I know it sounds crazy, but I just don't want him to miss everything. We were at the mall the other day and he wanted to play in the play area (aka germ incubation zone) and of course I wouldn't let him. He really wanted to and he was crying, and it just broke my heart. It's not fair, but I have to be careful. And this week he had Cookies and Carols, where the whole preschool performs Christmas songs for the parents, and tomorrow is the Happy Birthday Jesus party. How can I make him miss that? I can't. So I will do what I can to keep him healthy without completely living in a bubble. I realize that no matter how careful I am, he may get sick anyway. But I have to at least try.

Anyway, we went to Cookies and Carols tonight and Drew looked so cute. He stood up on the stage with the other kids and...well that's pretty much it. The kid did not sing a word! But I was proud of him for sticking it out and staying up with his class. When we got home he performed the entire program in front of our Christmas tree! I videoed both "performances" and if I can figure out how to download it from the camera I will post it here later.

Heart Catheterization Postponed

Drew has an ear infection. He is on antibiotics and we thought they may choose to do the cath anyway since it is not an URI. But we chatted with Dr. Parrish this morning, and they would like to postpone the cath for at least two weeks, so that Drew can completely heal from his sickness. There are two reasons for this.
1. We don't want to stress his system further when it is already stressed due to illness
2. Being sick might interfere with the very measurements they are looking for during the cath.

We have not rescheduled the cath yet, but it's looking like it will be January. I am feeling kind of ambivalent about the postponement. I guess it is for the best if he is not feeling well, and I am still recovering from my stomach virus, and it looks like Ava may be coming down with something as well. But its kind of hard to get prepared for the procedure and then have to wait, knowing that we'll have to get ourselves prepared all over again.

Thanks for thinking of us and praying for us and we'll let you know once it's rescheduled.

The best laid plans...

What a long day we have had! Everyone in the Himmelberger household is exhausted!

So, today was Drew's big appointment with the craniofacial team at UCD. And I wasn't looking forward to it. I knew it would be long, I didn't think Drew would cooperate and I thought they would have unpleasant news for us. But I made a little plan and figured out a way for me to be ok with it. The plan was that Dan would come with me both for moral support and so I didn't have to bear the total responsibility for answering the questions of a dozen doctors and reciting a medical history that can be mind-boggling. A friend of mine was going to watch Ava so that we could both go to the appointment. I got myself all ready last night. I loaded the diaper bag, set out everyone's clothes, packed toys and snacks to occupy Drew, even got the coffee maker all ready to go. We set the alarm and everything was going according to plan, when Dan interrupted my shower with this news: "Ava just threw up." What? That was NOT part of the plan. And then she threw up again. And pretty much the rest of the day. So obviously all my plans went out the window. I have to say I was pretty discouraged this morning, almost to the point of tears. I really didn't want to go at all and I especially didn't want to go by myself.

But, for a day that started out pretty crappy, it turned out pretty good. My son is amazing. We sat in the same room for 4 and a half hours and saw 12 doctors. He was so good! I almost cried watching him. I told him I was so proud of him for being so patient, for listening to the doctors, for being able to calm himself down, and just being so darn cute and sweet for so long in such difficult circumstances. Seriously, what three-year old can sit in a room for that long and not have a total melt-down?

I was expecting less than good news from the doctors, but they all seemed to be impressed with how well he was doing. At one point Drew had to have his ear canals cleaned with this metal instrument, while sitting in a chair kind of like a dental chair, and had to hold really still. He let them do the first ear, but wasn't ready to let them do the second ear. One of the doctors said if he couldn't hold still she'd have to wrap him (like swaddling), and I knew he wouldn't like that. So I told him, you have to hold still and if you can't they are going to wrap you like a baby. Can you hold still? And he said "yes mommy." Then my sweet, sweet boy started taking deep, cleansing breaths and he held perfectly still the rest of the time! I was so proud of him, being able to soothe himself and do what he had to do. And the doctors were so impressed! I even heard them talking in the hallway about how he did better than the five-year olds they see and how cute he was with his deep breaths.

Three hours into the appointment he had a hearing test, where he had to sit in this tiny room with headphones on and listen for more than half an hour. Every time he heard a beep he was suppose to pick up a toy and put it in a bucket. And I sat there watching him, thinking what kid does this? He is sitting here, following the directions of a stranger, not playing with the toys they way he would want to, not throwing the toys off the table because he is done with these people, but quietly listening for beeps. Every once in a while the audiologist would remind him to wait until he heard the sound to put the toy in and he would look at me and say "I have to listen."

So the basic news is his hearing is fine, his speech is fine, his palate is fine, his teeth are fine, his head shape is fine. The geneticist was impressed that Drew can recognize all his letters (she didn't even know he knows the sounds they all make too) and she did recommend we get an x-ray of his cervical spine. We'll see the panel again in another year or two, and we may see the speech pathologist for another evaluation in about six months.

On the way home I told Drew that he did such a good job that we could do whatever he wanted the rest of the day. We could go to the park with his friends, watch movies, bake cookies, go to the toy store...He picked toy store. We were about half way there when I looked back and he was asleep in his carseat! He must have been exhausted! So I took him home and let him sleep for a few hours. Then I woke him up and said let's go to the toy store! He picked a Mickey Mouse Christmas video to bring home and spent a lot of time looking at dinosaurs, cars & books.

Not only do I have the best son, I have the best husband. He took care of Ava all day while she either slept on him or puked on him and didn't complain about it at all! He is such a good daddy. Poor Ava could barely keep any water down and by the time she went to bed tonight the only thing she had eaten all day was a banana. Needless to say I have been trying to keep her and Drew apart since we don't want him getting sick before his cath next week. I bought some clorox anywhere spray and have cleaned all the toys Ava likes, all the toys Drew likes, the tables, the chairs, the remotes, etc. I also had Dan mop the floor with bleach to kill any germs that might be lurking. We may still all end up puking, but it won't be for lack of trying.

Rough Night

We had a rough night. It seems like Drew has gotten worse since we've been home. He's coughing a lot more and had another fever in the middle of the night. I borrowed a friend's sat monitor and he his oxygen levels are 77%. Normal for him is 85. We gave him two breathing treatments last night which seemed to help a bit, but he ended up in bed with us this morning. Which is fine with me, at least I can see what's happening and have him close by.

We saw the pediatrician this morning for his follow up appointment. She says he didn't have pneumonia and that the x-ray didn't indicate that he did. So I guess we got IV antibiotics just because they didn't know what he had. Then she listened to his lungs and said it sounded like he had pneumonia now. Great. She gave him a breathing treatment in the office and afterwards she couldn't hear it anymore. She said because of that she thinks its a virus and his airways are reacting to it. She called cardiology to check with them and recommended we do around the clock breathing treatments every four hours and see her again in the morning. She is hoping his sats will be coming up by then.

I am concerned. The poor kid is coughing so much he can't eat. Iam hoping we're all doing the right thing by keeping him home. I don't want him to have to be in the hospital especially when we had a perfectly good, working IV in yesterday that we just pulled out.

Dang it!

Despite my best efforts, it seems Drew has caught Ava's cold.

And unfortunately, we are planning to leave tomorrow for a camping trip. This always happens! He never gets sick when we're just hanging out with no plans. Only when we're about to go somewhere or do something fun. We're just hoping it doesn't bother him too much or turn into anything more than a cold. We're still planning to leave tomorrow for our annual HBC Trip with our college friends.

What is HBC? It stands for House Boat Crew. In the spring of 1998 we rented a houseboat with our college friends on Lake Shasta. It was cold! But that summer we tried it again and our yearly tradition was born. Every summer since then we've gotten together at a lake. The lake has changed (now we go to Trinity Lake) and we've stopped getting a houseboat, now we just camp. We've gotten married and started families and still get together every year, like a mini-reunion. Our current trip is much different from our original but we still have a lot of fun! And I really don't want to miss HB10!

Ava Update

Well, something's wrong with her, but I'm not sure what it is. She has a runny nose (mostly clear) and is coughing a little (mostly when she's laying down). Also pretty drooly. No fever and she's pretty much acting like her usual self too. And so far Drew is healthy! This makes me think that maybe its allergies. Can babies have allergies this young? Or maybe she's teething, although I don't see any coming through. So, who knows?

She's also decided that she no longer likes baby food. She refuses rice cereal mixed with any fruit or vegetable. She struggles to get away and blows raspberries. It's kind of cute, but not when it gets on you and all over the floor. So I have started feeding her exclusively finger foods. She loved them yesterday, but today not so much. The only thing she would eat today is cheese and buttered toast. At least she's finally getting 5-6 ounces of formula at each feeding.

Here is a list of things she threw on the floor at lunch:
  • hard boiled egg yolk
  • tiny pieces of chicken
  • tiny pieces of strawberry
  • cooked pasta
  • toast
  • cheese
Also, I've been quite productive today and am feeling a little proud of myself. This morning I went on a one-hour walk, took a shower (trust me this doesn't happen everyday), got both kids dressed, took Drew to the park for an hour, fed everybody lunch, did three loads of laundry, and cleaned two bathrooms. And that was by 3:30! So to reward myself I get to go scrapbook with my friends tonight. I hope I am just as productive tonight!

Easter Party

So I decided to take Drew to a toddler Easter party, despite our Dr.'s orders to avoid groups of children. About half the party was outside, so that lessens the chance of infection, right? Even as I sit and write this Ava is coughing in his face, so why bother limiting our fun when she will probably get him sick just in time for Easter Sunday anyway.

Anyway, we had a lot of fun although I was constantly evaluating the other party-goers for runny noses or coughing and making a mental note of which children to avoid getting too close to. Drew colored about 3 of the eggs I brought and I had fun decorating the rest. There was also a duck craft which I convinced him to try, plus a yummy lunch and Easter egg hunt. He was so glad to be reunited with some of his friends and really enjoyed playing outside with them.

We left the possibly infectious, possibly allergenic Ava Baby at home with Daddy. Despite not feeling well she looks pretty adorable in the bunny ears that Grandma sent. I am hoping to be able to put both kids in their Easter clothes and take some cute pictures today, but we'll have to see how everyone is feeling.

Bad Mood

I'm in a mood. And its not a good one.

You would think that with the quarantine and complete house arrest we've been under there would be no possible way my kids could get sick. But you would be wrong.

It appears that Ava has a cold. I know, its not the end of the world, but I am trying my hardest to avoid group activities & to keep everyone covered in purell, and for what? Why am I avoiding the fun things that we like to do if some rogue germs are just going to get us anyway? And how am I possibly going to keep Drew from getting whatever she has? I give up!
